VICTORIAN HAND & Heart BROOCH

Antique Victorian faux jet brooch of hand holding a daisy framed by two hearts.

Mourning or sentimental jewellery circa 1870 with love symbolism (daisy's symbolised purity and innocence). I haven't seen another with the double heart design.

Black jewellery, particularly Whitby jet, was made popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. Having lost her husband, Albert, HM the Queen wore only black. What followed were specific rules about what a person in mourning should wear. This was also the age of sentimental jewellery when men and women alike would gift and/or wear, sometimes coded or obvious, symbols to signify their romantic feelings, love or stage of mourning.

Note the brass pin to the reverse; true jet had glued pins to avoid shattering. Jet simulants included pressed horn, glass, vulcanite and gutta percha. This looks to be a combination of materials - the hearts have a wood grain to the reverse but the main body is moulded and emits a burning hair smell.

Boxes shown are for display only.
