Mid to late 1800s antique Victorian chemise with monogrammed initials SM or MS in scarlet red embroidery.

The fabric is a thick white linen, which is in lovely clean condition and has natural slubs to the weave. Features a round neckline with crochet lace edged rectangular placket, hand stitched button holes and two shell buttons. The main body has pleats into the yoke, short sleeves with godet inserts under each arm and down the side seams. The seams are mainly machine sewn but hand stitching is evident in the central monogram and the button holes, as mentioned above.

Best fit: small approx UK 10/12 or US 8/10. 32 / 34 inch bust.
The main body is worn loose. The underarms bunch up a little, due to the inserted fabric - I have always imagined this was to accommodate space for a corset and movement.
