Rare as hens teeth, hallmarked antique Grann & Laglye Danish silver button with a moonstone cabochon.
A beautiful small Skønvirke button that dates to early 1900s Denmark. Box is for display only. This listing is for the button only.
The organic design is typical of this era when Danish silversmiths were creating in a similar style to jewellers of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Flowing, abstract floral motifs are generally embellished with gemstone cabochons such as seen here with the pale silver blue moonstones that has an ethereal quality.
Brooches are fairly easy to source but buttons are rare, especially this one as it's made by one of the leading Danish jewellers of the time.
Fine jewelled buttons were often worn, by both men and women, in the 1800s, into the 1900s and were removed if one needed to clean a garment. They were also given as tokens of affection. Often these were converted into brooches, for practical reasons or to be given as gifts, so this is a quite a find as it is in original condition with its loop attached to the rear.
Grann and Laglye was founded by silversmiths, Jalhannes Lauritz Grann and Johannes Laglye in Denmark. The company lasted from 1906 to 1955.
Hallmarks: Early 1900s Grann and Laglye maker mark, 830s (silver mark) and the Thor's hammer motif in the middle of D A mark (Danish Trade Promotion Association).
Length: 2 cm (please note the size before purchase).
