History snippet:
Monet was founded by brothers Michael and Joseph Chernow who began their business as a monogramming firm (Monocraft) in New York. They created innovative, time saving metal and decal monograms to car dealerships who used them to personalise vehicles in the 1920s.
Following the 1929 Great Depression, the brothers again found a gap in the market by offering processes that speeded up production, for stores like Macy's, to personalise lady's handbags. This led them to enter the world of jewellery in the mid thirties. Their Click-It brooches, which could be personalised with a person's initials at department store counters, were so successful they enabled them to open a factory in Providence.
In 1934 the brothers hired jewellery designer Edmond Mario Granville, from the esteemed jewellers Cartier, and in 1937 Monet was born. Monocraft continued to be the brand under which initial jewellery was sold but Monet was the name behind costume jewellery that replicated the glamour of fine jewellery, as designed by Granville.
