Th. and P. Moerkerk were silversmiths in the Netherlands and operated from 1923/8 to 1952. The brooch has their maker mark to the front lower right.
The Night Watch was a popular subject with Dutch silversmiths and can be found on various early 20th Century silverware, from trinket boxes to vanity items. This brooch is a pretty rare find though and, judging from its construction, likely dates to the earlier works by Moerkerk and Co.
Closes with an elongated pin and c catch.
Width: 3.7 cm
Length: 5.5 cm
Condition: Very good
History snippet:
This brooch is inspired by the Dutch artist, Rembrandt's 1642 painting known as, 'The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch', which came to be nicknamed, 'The Night Watch'.
The painting, which was his largest and is now housed at the Rijksmuseum, was made for one of the three headquarters of Amsterdam's civic guard. The guards were civilian soldiers that defended the city from attack. The centre character is the captain who is gesturing with his hand in the painting - possibly to his guards to move out - but the brooch makes it look like he's actually giving the thumbs up! The original painting has quite an interesting history, including spending time in a temporary location during the Napoleonic occupation of the Netherlands and in the caves of Maastricht during the second World War.
