Antique Victorian fully hallmarked solid silver trombone link Albert pocket watch chain by silversmith E. Whitehouse and Son, Birmingham, England. Dated 1900.
A stylish, heavy (33g) chain decorated with a T bar and American dime dated 1875. Shown here with a silver sovereign holder (for sale separately - contact me).
The name 'Albert' was inspired by watch chains worn by Prince Albert during the reign of Queen Victoria (1800s Britain). The T bar slips into a vest button hole, whilst the swivel hook attached to a pocket watch (what the majority wore pre wrist watches) to keep it safe. The chain then dangles across the waistline and was often decorated with a fob, or in this case an American dime.
Pocket watches have become very popular once again, in part due to popular films and TV programmes such as Peaky Blinders.
Hallmarks on links: Lion passant
Hallmarks on swivel clip/dog clip and T bar: Lion passant, letter a for the year made - 1900, E.W. & S. for E. Whitehouse & Son.
The chain links have the lion hallmark.
E. Whitehouse & Son appear to have been based in Vyse Street, Birmingham, England.
Length: 35 cm (check the length if you're considering wearing as a choker necklace)
Weight: 33 g
Condition: Good solid condition with minor age wear.
Important: Please keep all beads and small items of jewellery away from young children as they could present a choking hazard.
