Large Antique Victorian Cameo Swivel Brooch Depicting Greek God Apollo Large Antique Victorian Cameo Swivel Brooch Depicting Greek God Apollo

$119.00
Large mid 1800s antique Victorian cameo swivel brooch depicting Apollo, Greek God of light, healing and the arts, in carved shell with a frame of gold tone etched scrolls.

A beautiful piece of 19th Century antique jewellery that was once a locket or mourning brooch. It would have had a glass back to hold a lock of hair or keepsake of a loved one, which you could swivel to the front. The frame has a lovely yellow gold colour and you can see the silver underneath the mid point scrolls where the gold has worn.

Features a handsome portrait of Apollo with his laurel crown and flowing locks. Apollo was the Greek God of many things, including sun and light, the arts, beauty, music, poetry, archery and more.

Wealthy Victorians loved The Grand Tour of Europe, which saw them travelling to Italy and returning with souvenir cameos of lava and shell. Greek mythology was a popular subject of much of this jewellery. Cameos remained in fashion on and off for much of the 1800s with some trends calling for them to be worn virtually everywhere, hair, neck, waist etc. In peak cameo fashion there were even cameo habille, where the cameo subject also wore a tiny piece of jewellery.

Closes with a c catch and has the original safety chain loop and pin.

Width: 5.7 cm
height: 6.5 cm
weight: 37g

Condition: See images as they form part of the description, the shell is good and the scrolls all appear to be intact, there is general age wear to the overall piece and the back glass panel is absent.

Important: Please keep all beads, sharp and small items of jewellery away from young children as they could present a choking hazard.

All vintage items have been pre-used, unless stated otherwise, and may have gentle signs of wear.
