Antique French linen nightgown. Mid to late 1800s antique Victorian linen nightdress monogrammed in red embroidery with initials that may be M and D.
Features long sleeves with gussets to underarms. The neck, placket and cuffs are trimmed in hand crocheted lace. The button holes are also hand stitched and close with white China buttons. This is in excellent robust condition for its age. It is slightly off kilter, as can be seen from the images. There are two tucks in the left seam and a triangular godet inserted in the right seam. Also has decorative pleats to the back neckline.
The fabric is true linen so not a pure white and has irregularities to the colour, which is natural as is the slub texture. It’s also quite thick but comfortable.
A beautiful piece of history from Dickens's time that should last another hundred years.
Measurements:
Please check the measurements below and contact me if you need assistance.
Chest: up to 42 inch
Underarm to underarm: 21 inch
Waist: up to 43 inch
Hips: up to 50 inch
Length: 37 inch
Sleeves: 18 inch from the dropped shoulder seam - please do check this against something you already own that fits.
Size guidance / best fit:
In the U.K. a 42 inch chest/bust would usually be a size 16/18 but I would say the best fit - due to the fit around the arms - would be a U.K. 14/16.
This is supposed to be worn fairly loosely.
I am 5ft 4 inches and it is knee length.
Weighs 600g.
Condition: Genuinely excellent with very minor age wear - see all images. This is also nice and clean, having been hand laundered and line dried in fresh Yorkshire sunshine.
All vintage items have been pre-used, unless stated otherwise, and may have gentle signs of wear.
